Home Away From Home
By Frederick Scarf, University of California-Berkeley
Going home.
Everyone has different feelings about going home.
Some are homesick and are counting down the days till they return
to mom's home-cooked meal; others feel quite the opposite. I'm in
the middle.
Going home is strange, because I have another home
in Berkeley (my dorm). When I go home to Los Angeles, I feel detached
from the city, in a way. Knowing that the bed I used to sleep in
isn't the only bed I have is strange. There is a part of me that
will always be connected to Los Angeles, but there is a part of
me that wants to see what else is out there and what else is out
there is Los Angeles.
It is usually a tradition for me to go to Disneyland
with some friends. The first friends who popped into my mind were
my friends from college. I've realized how important vicinity is
to relationships. I've gotten to know my floormates and others around
my residential hall pretty well, as opposed to the other residential
halls. And while I've tried to keep in touch with all my other friends
from other schools, I've struggled because it's so easy to loose
yourself in the college life: there is always something to do and
always something going on.
When I go home, I think about all my friends at
Berkeley and what they are up to. It is strange to be in a community
where there are 50,000 young students and then go off to a diverse
city that has a totally different atmosphere; I don't even know
how to describe it, but it's neat.
So I don't really consider going home as "going
home," because Berkeley is my home, too!
