College Is Anything But Routine
By Frederick Scarf, University of California-Berkeley
After about a month into college, many students have been able to
get into their routines: Sleep in; go to class; go to club meeting;
do homework; meet up with friends.
While I do love routine, I also love exploring and
stepping out of my comfort zone and experiences things I wouldn't
have had the opportunity to experience in high school.
One thing I like to do is go around and eat a local
restaurants or markets. Yesterday, I was faced with a choice to
eat at Chipotle (a popular burrito chain) or at Sam's Market (a
local market in Berkeley). I chose Sam's Market, even though I wasn't
sure if I'd find anything I'd like. I looked at the sandwich menu
and tried the "Fred's famous sandwich." It was good. Really good.
In this past month, I've also been able to eat at vegan cafes, Mediterranean
restaurants, and Middle Eastern restaurants.
While I am exploring these little niches in Berkeley,
I still stick to my routine. I usually study in my room, but sometimes
I try to explore the town and study in a little cafe. Sometimes,
I wake up early and spend my mornings at local cafes off the campus.
I usually order breakfast and read for a class. One of the reasons
I love doing this is because it is really nice to just look around
a see different people. One time, I couldn't finish my food so I
gave it to this homeless man. That was something I couldn't really
experience if I always followed my routine.
I don't consider myself in a position to give advice-after
all, I'm still figuring things out, too-but I suggest taking a chance
and exploring as much as you can. Your explorations don't have to
be epic nor do you have to completely break away from your routine.
But just do something you wouldn't usually do. My next exploration
is to eat at a dining hall I've never been to-I know that doesn't
sound exciting, but hey, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone.
