The Freshman 15? Yeah, It's Real.
By Frederick Scarf, University of California-Berkeley
I knew freshman-year weight gain, better known as the Freshman 15,
existed, but I never thought it would happen to me.
I went to Costco to get some snacks for the dorm,
and I went a little crazy. And I tend to have the most food on my
plate (or should I say plates) in the cafeteria. I'll never forget
the time I got chicken, potatoes, pizza, pasta, a quesadilla, rice,
water (like that makes the lunch healthy) and ice cream. When I
saw my plate, my friend and I just started laughing because the
food resembled a mountain.
The first time I realized the Freshman 15 was a
reality was when I walked up the stairs outside my dorm and I was
out of breath; I guess eating Lucky Charms and chocolate milk with
no exercise can do that to you.
The incident that inspired me to change my habits
was when I zipped up my shorts and they couldn't zip up all the
way: I wore them anyway. After waking around for a few hours, the
button popped off of the shorts. It was pretty funny, but kind of
embarrassing. I had to ask a floor mate to sew the button back on.
Those shorts motivated me to have a healthier lifestyle.
I try to go to the gym every day to stay in shape,
alleviate stress and just be healthy. I stopped eating junk food
and have replaced my ice cream with an apple and my Lucky Charms
with this antioxidant cereal.
I have a friend who is a gym nut. We both want
to stay healthy and get those beach bodies (hey, you can never prepare
too early). I enjoy going to the gym and seeing people from class.
Also, it is a great escape when I start to get stressed out. I have
even made a playlist on my iPod for workout music.
The Freshman 15 experience changed me. More so,
I appreciate the pants that I currently fit in.
Four tips on avoiding the Freshman 15:
1. Try to go to the gym as frequently as possible.
2. Allow one slip a week.
3. Manage portions! Be aware of how much you are eating.
4. Try to get healthy snacks for you dorm, such as granola bars
and mixed nuts.
