Nice to go home; nice to be back
By Frederick Scarf, University of California-Berkeley
After finishing a semester of school, coming back is pretty nice. I expected to feel like a visitor, but I quickly transformed back into the high schooler who can’t stay awake past midnight (as opposed to college, where I hope to get to bed around 2 a.m.).
I was able to do things I wasn’t able to do during the semester. I visited old friends. It was nice to get together with my high school friends, even though they haven’t changed that much. For some reason I expected reuniting with high school friends to be epic. I envisioned my friends having these crazy stories about their experiences in college and having different haircuts and everything. But it was quite different. My friends didn’t have crazy stories or really anything dramatic. I kind of liked the fact that they were still themselves.
It was nice to spend the holidays in Los Angeles. My sister hosted a holiday party a few days I arrived. So it was great to share the holiday spirit with our friends. I spent the remaining weeks reading for pleasure, celebrating New Years Eve with friends in San Diego, visiting museums, hanging out with my parents and reflecting on my semester.
My first semester was a good transition semester. I was able to learn about the city and university and get the gist of college life. And most importantly, I’ve been able to see how I want to spend this semester. For example, I would love to see more of San Francisco and get more involved on campus. I didn’t join any clubs last semester because I knew the first semester would be more of a transition semester. Now that I have a better understanding of how things work around UC Berkeley, I’m ready to take charge and get involved!
