Reflections on volunteering

By Jumayah Brown, Action Team Captain
Manual High School, Denver

The Rainbow House Head Start, a program of Volunteers of America Colorado, serves children with HIV/AIDS. Visit the Volunteer Center for tips from the Denver Action Team on volunteering with young children in your community.

The Rainbow House was a unique and meaningful experience in my life. While dealing with the children from single-parent or no-parent homes, I too felt their soreness because I was raised in a single-parent home, which turned into a no-parent home. I embraced them because I can relate and understand their situation.

I understand that no one goes through life without experiencing trials and that gave me compassion for them. I became a conqueror out of my circumstances and I want to help them to do the same, no matter what the conditions they were born into. Life can shake you, surprise you, disappoint you, but it can’t prevent you from taking the situation you’re presented with and moving on.

While these preschoolers may seem young, I feel that now is the time to start teaching them these lessons and providing them with mentors and role models who have made the right choices themselves. These children look up to us. It meant a lot to me to be part of that and start showing them that there is no shame in seeking to improve your life and being strong in your response to the trials life brings your way.”
