HAVE NO FEAR: MAKING FRIENDS IN COllEGE IS easier than you think
By Chris Peters, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
One of the greatest fears entering college is losing your friends. Most high school seniors cherish the final few months with their friends in high school.
High school graduation is a big step into the future for most people, and although it comes with much more responsibility, it can provide students with a fresh start. That fresh start begins from day one in college, with meeting new people and establishing a new sense of identity.
The best way to start meeting people is just by going door to door and socializing with the people on your dorm floor. Although not everyone may fit what you're looking for in a friend, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone you don't like.
It's very easy to find friends at college, even though it may seem a little awkward at first. All it takes is one good time with someone on your floor to help build a year-long friendship. A simple get-together like a pickup game of football, watching a movie or even just eating lunch together can be a great jump-off point.
Another way to meet people is through classes. Many classes are larger lecture-style classes, so there's a great chance of finding someone enjoyable to sit by. One funny joke in the middle of a boring class can be enough to break the ice and form the basis for a new friendship.
If you're looking for one sure-fire way to meet people at college, you can't go wrong with joining a club. There are numerous clubs around campus for all sorts of interests in many different career fields. Most clubs meet once or twice a month, so there is plenty of flexibility to join more than one.
No matter which route you take, you can't go through more than a week at college without making new friends. College is a great time to expand your friends group or to just start with a fresh slate. Although it may be tough letting old friends go, keep your head up, because you''ll be surprised to find that college provides more opportunities for friendships than high school did.
