A new Routine
By Chris Peters, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
For the last 14 years of my life, it's been the same routine: class from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., do homework, watch TV and go to sleep. That’s about 2,500 school days of the same thing, none of which could prepare me for what lie ahead in college.
So yes, for all who are curious, college is a big thing. It's life changing, and not just in the inspirational manner; this really does shape your life dramatically.
In the one short month I've spent in college, I've had to completely revamp my sleep schedule, social circle and work schedule, just to name a few brief things. I've cleaned out my bank account, I've been up past 1 a.m. doing homework, and I've walked a mile in the pouring rain. But to be completely honest, it's been one of the greatest months of my entire life.
Whether it's the proximity to friends or just the absolute freedom, college seems to radiate happiness. On any given day I can spend upwards of six hours with friends and still have time for homework.
What it really comes down to in college is time management. The students that schedule their time efficiently typically succeed, while the party-heavy friends first attitude normally results in failure or mediocrity.
In the little time that I've spent here, I've found that I have grown up quite a bit because of time management. Now that mommy and daddy aren't around, there's nobody to walk me through life. It hurts quite a bit more having to take the hit from your own wallet, whether it be for books, tuition or just food, every penny takes on a greater value.
There's a huge gap between high school and college, but it's a necessary one to bridge into adulthood. The lessons you learn in the first weeks of college can benefit you for years to come. College may appear to be scary, but in all actuality, it's been nothing but fun. |
