stressed out
By Chris Peters, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
College is different from high school in a number of ways, but one thing remains the same, if not magnified: stress.
The biggest key to success at college is the ability to manage that stress. Whether it is from final exams, late homework, time-scheduling issues or even social problems, stress can come from many different sources. However, unlike high school, there are far different resources readily available to help you cope with that stress.
First, the access to a counselor is much more difficult. While there are counselors available, they are busy and hard to approach, whereas in high school they were just down the hall and much more open to meet. If you can find the time and patience to meet with a counselor, then it is a good route to take. However, for most college students it is an unrealistic route, because with busy schedules and class, there simply isn't the time available for a professional session.
A more realistic solution for college students to beat stress is by simply blowing off steam. This is probably the most common route for students. Athletic activity, video games or even some loud music can be enough to take someone's mind off of their current troubles.
For some unlucky students, they might not even have enough time for quick leisure activities; after all, college courses can be very demanding. For these students, peer-to-peer interaction or venting is probably the best way of handling stress. This can happen even in the short time it takes to walk to a class or during a meal. Simply explaining your problems and having someone understand where you are coming from can provide a great deal of help in overcoming stress.
Stress is unavoidable, especially in college when you feel the pressure to succeed and the responsibilities that come along with finally being an adult. Although the leap from high school to college can be a difficult one, there are many ways to cope with stress. With the help of friends and a little self-motivation, it is possible to overcome.
