“Volunteer! You Could Be the Reason Why a Child Is Smiling!”
Action Team Captain: Kelly Yevoli
School: Cathedral High School, New York, New York
Grade: Senior in Fall 2008
I volunteer because … “I want to make a difference in others’ lives and provide them with things they don’t usually get to experience.”
Favorite volunteer experience . . . “Volunteering at Christ the King Daycare and Operation Backpack.* At Christ the King Daycare, I work mostly with the 4- and 5-year-old children on reading, counting, taking them out to the playground. I help the teachers to teach the children manners and work with them on cleaning up after lunch and making their own bed at naptime.
“Both are my favorite volunteer activities because I love working with children and I try to provide them with the most I can.”
First volunteer experience . . . “Catholic Youth Organization at St. Thomas the Apostle Gymnasium. I would help with the concession stand and keep score at the basketball games.”
How volunteering benefits me. . . “It feels great to make a difference in a child’s life.”
How I benefit others and my community by volunteering . . . “I love volunteering and making a difference. I set as a positive role model and I bring the community [of students] together to work as a team.”
What I tell other teens to encourage them to volunteer . . . “I tell my friends to make a change in our society and to make our community a better place. I always tell them a little change can make the biggest impact on another person’s life. You could be the reason why that child is smiling.”
What’s in My iPod . . . “My iPod ranges from hip hop to punk. I like to explore all types of music and not stick to one genre.”
Favorite baseball player . . . “Jose Reyes”
Volunteer plans for the summer … “I will be volunteering at Christ the King Daycare and hopefully other programs.”

* Editor’s Note: Operation Backpack provides new backpacks filled with essential school supplies to children whose families are homeless. The New York Mets, the Minnesota Twins, and the New York and Minneapolis/St. Paul Action Teams are currently involved with Operation Backpack
